HOBBY FLYING

Do you want make your dreams of flying come true? We can make it happen. We can teach you to fly both ultralights and certified planes.

We offer three "hobby" license variants:

ULL(A) - Ultralight License

LAPL(A) - Light Aircraft Pilot License

PPL(A) - Private Pilot License

The Ultralight License is a national license intended for hobbyists looking for nothing more than the occasional air time and the joy of flying. Issued by the Light Aircraft Association, this license is valid in the Czech Republic and several neighboring countries. We recommend the LAPL(A) mainly to experienced ultralight pilots looking to upgrade to a "grown-up" plane. The PPL(A) is a globally-valid license and the first step on the journey towards becoming a professional; it is also great for those looking to fly not just for joy, but also on private or business trips. If flying gets under your skin, you can eventually rise to Commercial Pilot CPL(A) and beyond, and do what you love for a living. Whichever way you decide to go, flying makes a great use of your free time, if we do say so ourselves.

Hobby License Comparison

Which planes can I fly once I graduate? any ultralight plane (after familiarization training)

any single-engine piston aircraft (after familiarization/differences training) with max. take-off weight up to 2,000 kg and max. 3 passengers on board (+ pilot)

any single-engine piston aircraft (after familiarization/differences training)

How many people can I fly with? yourself plus 1 (once you get 50 h total and 5 h on type) yourself plus 3 (once you get 10 h PIC after obtaining the LAPL(A)) according to the aircraft
Where can I fly? Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Poland; other EU countries with prior clearance all EASA member states worldwide
Who issues the license? Czech Light Aircraft Association (LAA ČR) EASA and Czech Civil Aviation Authority EASA and Czech Civil Aviation Authority
How long is the training?

theory: 45 h

flight training: 20 h

theory: 100 h (40 h with lector, 60 h self-study)

flight training: 30 h

theory: 100 h (40 h with lector, 60 h self-study)

flight training: 45 h

What are the highlights? low training costs; planes cheap to rent great for ULL(A) holders - up to 15 flight hours can be accepted from ULL(A)

valid worldwide; rich ratings options; upgradeable to CPL(A)

How can I grow further? VFR controlled flights, upgrade to LAPL(A) upgrade to PPL(A); Aerobatics and Night VFR Night VFR, IR(A), MEP, FI(A), ACR; upgrade to CPL(A)

From PPL(A)/LAPL(A) to ULL(A):

Training:

  • theory: not applicable
  • flight training: in the form of familiarization training to ULL
    • ground preparation: technical aspects of airplane and differences in air law for ULL (extract from regulation UL-1), what and how LAA manages
    • 1:15 h dual 9 flights, 1:00 h solo 7 flights
    • in the case that pilot is trained for the same type of aircraft, but in VLA category (same fuselage and engine), then it's possible to reduce time to 0:20 h dual 3 flights (1x circuit, 2x landing with engine off)

Skill test:

  • theory: test (42 questions) on PC in F AIR premises
  • flying: min. 0:35 h 3 flights with LAA inspector (instructor F AIR)

Note: The qualification "VFR Controlled Flights" and "language proficiency (ICAO English)" can be written to ULL Pilot's license administratively at LAA ČR based on data in valid aircraft pilot license.

From ULL(A) to LAPL(A):

Training:

  • theory: in full extent, 100 h (40 h with lector, 60 h self-study)
  • flight training: The pilot's previous experience on another category of aircraft can be credited after the pre-entry flight exam (approx. 1 hour of flight) with FI and according to his proposal. With max. credit is min. training 15 h, of which 6 h solo flights, of which 3 h solo navigation flights, of which 1 solo cross-country navigation flight of at least 80 NM (150 km), during which one full stop landing at an aerodrome different from the aerodrome of departure shall be made. The credit may not exceed the total time as pilot-in-command. (e.g. a maximum credit of 15 h for ULL(A) holder may be granted in the case that pilot pass pre-entry flight exam successfully and has a min. 15 h PIC on ULL(A), then practical training is reduced to 15 h - 9 h dual and 6 h solo)

Skill test:

  • theory: exam at CAA (9 subjects)
  • flying: min. 1:30 h airplane handling technique and navigation flight to controlled airspace with F AIR examiner

From ULL(A) to PPL(A):

Training:

  • theory: in full extent, 100 h (40 h with lector, 60 h self-study)
  • flight training: Holders of pilot's license (H), (S) or SLZ (like ULL) can be credited with 10% of their PIC flight time, but maximum 10 h. Even after credit the training course must include min. 15 h dual and min. 10 h solo flights, of which 5 h solo navigation flights, of which 1 solo cross-country navigation flight of at least 150 NM (270 km), during which full stop landings at two aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure whall be made. For credit, the PIC flight time must be proved by a pilot or aircraft logbook. (např. maximum credit 10 h for ULL(A) holders may be if the pilot has 100 h PIC, then the practical flight training is reduced to 35 h - 25 h dual and 10 h solo)

Skill test:

  • theory: exam at CAA (9 subjects)
  • flying: min. 1:30 h airplane handling technique and navigation flight to controlled airspace with F AIR examiner

From LAPL(A) to PPL(A):

Training:

  • theory: not applicable, theory exam LAPL(A) is identical to PPL(A)
  • flight training: 15 h on airplanes once you obtain LAPL(A) license, of which min. 10 h PPL(A) training including at least 4 h solo under FI supervision including 2 h navigation flights, of which 1 solo cross-country navigation flight of at least 150 NM (270 km), during which full stop landings at two aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure whall be made. (e.g. obtaining LAPL(A), 5 h solo based on obtained license, 10 h training PPL(A) - 6 h dual and 4 h solo)

Skill test:

  • theory: not applicable, theory exam LAPL(A) is identical to PPL(A)
  • flying: min. 1:30 h airplane handling technique and navigation flight to controlled airspace with F AIR examiner
